Rehearsal Reflection
Please post comments about our rehearsal performance:
- TWO positive comments (these can be general)
- TWO constructive comments (these must be specific and include measure numbers). You may mention specific sections (cellos, violin 2, etc.).
Please include your FIRST and LAST name when you comment so I can easily assign your grade.
Positive Comments
1. Measure 77-82 had good intonation and we stayed together.
2. The intonation was good overall for most of the notes.
Constructive Comments
1. In measure 37 the first violins were not together at all and everyone played different notes at different times, so we can improve on that.
2. In measures 38-40, we need to work on the intonation and especially shifting from second finger in first position to 4th finger in 3rd position (for first violins).
3. We also need to work on timing because I noticed first violins were a few measures behind and I think we got lost somewhere around measure 45.
Pros:
This piece was the better of the two pieces.
Cellos were really playing out their part which is really good.
Cons:
I couldn’t really hear violin 2 throughout the piece.
Dynamics weren’t really played in measure 15. We need to make the crescendos and decrescendos more distinctive. Violin I sound out of tune in measures 41-50 somewhere around there.

Positive Comments
We played most of the notes and rhythms correct
We did good at trying to hit some of the dynamics and stayed together towards the end
Constructive comments
At measure 37, the violas and cellos played the melody well together but we need to use more dynamics from measure 44-49.
The cellos did good with playing together but not with the rest of the group. We were ahead for the first 15 measures or so in the beginning
We did good at trying to hit some of the dynamics and stayed together towards the end.
Two good things, first the third position in 77-80 didn’t sound that bad and ending sounded relatively confident. Few bad things, violins didn’t really feel in tune measures 1-8, I could barely hear the 1st violins in measures 37-40 even though we have forte, I think first violins were a bit behind in measure 52 and, the 5th position at the end felt out of tune.
Constructive: Cellos in measure 1-4 were counting in 4/4. Cellos need to be louder in measures 37-44.
Positive: Cellos did good god with notes in measure 79-80 and 27-28.
Most if the piece, cellos did a okay job in counting 2/2.
2 Positive: I like how together the lower strings are. I think the dynamics are good but I know we can make them better.
2 Constructive: I think the violins need to definitely fix their intonation and cover their open strings. I also think the whole orch should practice cutting off together at the \\ and at the end.
1st constructive comment: Overall the intonation was pretty good but in some specific measures it’s really audible that it is not
2nd constructive comment: If we counted or moved more we might have been more together
1st good thing: Ending was really nice, if we counted a bit more and decided on note lengths it might have been better
2nd good thing: Dynamics in end were good but I think our our softer places should be even quieter so we can hear the other parts too

Appalachian sunrise: Positive-We know the piece well. It seems very in tune throughout most of the song. Negative-the whole orchestra wasn’t together from measures 7-13. The high notes on measures 86-88 were really out of tune.
Ancient ritual: Positive-we know the first page well. The dynamics are quite good, although they could be better. Negative-measure 46 was not together at all. The violas were not together or in tune during the pizzicato at measures 73-76.
We did well with rhythms and syncopation.
We also did pretty well with intonation.
I think the group needs to work on staying with the tempo, for example cellos slowing down or violins speeding up to catch up.
We should also work a little bit on crescendos and decrescendos.
The abrupt stop at measure 82 was together, and we started it back together. Cello and bases were in tune nicely from 82-88. We did not all start the song together (we needed to breathe). We all needed to work on intunation for pretty much the entire song.
The start of the piece, all of the sections could use some work on intonation, and the ending every section was off tempo.
The cellos in measure 27-28 sounds beautiful, and dynamics on those scales similar to 27-28 sound very beautiful as well.
One constructive criticism is that we have to work on the beginning of measure 1 – 5 every instrument on intonation and coming in together.
Second constructive criticism is that throughout the piece everybody was sometimes out of tempo and not playing together.
One positive comment measure 22 to 28 was really well played by the cello and bass.

One positive comment measure 22 to 28 was really well played by the cello and bass.
second positive comment is that 59 to 62 was played well correct tempo and the dynamics was great.
Positive feedback: Overall, it sounded decent, I liked the dynamics and how for the most part we were able to get back together when we got lost.
Critique: I noticed in the beginning, the violins sounded a bit flat and out of tune (then again, I’m not entirely sure because I don’t play violin.) Throughout the entire piece, each section did end up falling behind / rushing. When the cellos had the melody, we didn’t play very loud which caused it to hardly even sound like a melody. Overall, I think all sections could work on listening to the other sections and work on blending the sound together(EX. Turn on a recording of the violin part and play the cello part along with it.) Because now it sounds more of like every section is playing different pieces or at different spots.

Positive
– we did well with dynamics
– intonation was well
Constructive
– we need to work on our timing throughout
– some of us are out of tune
Positive things about this piece are that in measure 34 the cellos sounded good and in measures 41-43 we played together.
Constructive criticism are that we started the piece in measure 1 not together and in measure 16-20 we weren’t together.
Positive comments – 1. The first 5 measures are okay not bad we are together. 2. Most of the first violins notes are in tune
Constructive comments – 1. The cellos are way to loud after measure 5 I can not hear anyone but them. Or it’s the violins and violas playing too quietly we have to follow dynamics they are so important to the piece.
2. we are NOT together at all after the first 5 measures we have to make sure we look up and follow the tempo of dr Laux. Also at the end someone from the first violin section played a open E instead of a high 3rd finger E and it doesn’t not sound balanced at all.
Positive:
1) we started together
2) if there were rests, we would stop
Constructive:
1) there was no intonation. The chellos were out of tune. The violas were also out of tune in the middle to the end of the music. The violins are out of tune especially when they play the high notes.
2) there was no pulse. I could not recognize where we were in the song, because no one was together.
Two positive things about this piece in this that the end has improved since we worked on it in class. Another one is that the beginning up to measure was pretty good. Two constructive comments is that we need to work on intonation. For example, in measures 83-88, we were out of tune. Also, after/around measure 5, I think we stopped counting and we started to get off beat.
positive: we maintained a good tempo, parts with the melody we’re easily heard
constructive: measure 38 violas need play more together, measures 5 and on started sounding less in tune.
The ending is sounding a lot more confident
Melody part sounded great
First violins need to tune up the 5th position at the end
Overall tempo was kind of all over the place
Positive:
1. We were together for some parts
2. Some of the high notes didn’t hurt my ears that much(specifically talking about my section so something I also need to work on)
Negative:
1. Most of the high notes could be better
2. Not quite in tune
Positive comments
1. The cellos had good tone.
2. In the beginning measures the violas sounded together.
Constructive comments
1. Throughout the piece the 1st violins were not counting and got either behind or ahead.
2. Certain notes that 1st plays are very out of tune.
3. 1st need to be more dramatic with dynamics.
4. Needs more confidence with high notes.
5. Cellos were too loud and violins were too quiet/ no section balance.
Constructive: I can’t really hear second violins and all the sections need to work on staying together
Positive: cellos are doing a great job at staying together and dynamics
Constructive: we all need to work harder on ending together and I couldn’t really hear second violins
Positive: We played loud and confident and some points and the ending sounds better than before.
Negative: We need to stay in tune and play together. We also need to work on our intonation throughout the first part of the song.
Positive: The cellos are definitely heard throughout the piece and nobody played on rests.
Constructive: We should look up more and not rush, especially for cellos on page one, and everyone should listen to the other sections.
Positive
1:There was very good contrast between the upper strings and the lower strings.
2: I could feel the rests
Negative
1: The violas were not together when we started measure 38
2: A violin did not stop with everyone else in the last measure.
Positive: The cellos and bass played really well. The violas also played really well and you could here them clearly and nicely.
Constructive: We were not together I could hear that the cello, basses and violas played well together but the violins were not together at all. We need to work on intonation and counting the piece because in the piece I heard many different notes. At the end of the piece we did not end with good intonation.
Positive Comments
1. We had good dynamics and we all got back together when we were playing off.
2. We did good at having balance and recognizing when someone had the melody so that section could play louder and the others could back off.
Constructive Comments
1. The cellos were a little bit ahead of the rest of the orchestra in measures 1-5 and we also play 13-29 without many dynamics but we stayed together.
2. We played well at 37-45 but we could play with dynamics more. Also, at measures 77-82, it wasn’t totally together because we weren’t looking up.
Positive: We started together.
After measure 69 we pulled it together and actually sounded pretty nice for the most part except for a slip up by the cellos at 79.
Negative: The Cellos were behind until about measure six.
Measures 12-22 the upper strings had a lot of problems with staying together and seemed to lack confidence in the notes they knew causing them to be all over the place in terms of intonation and speed.
Positive:
1. The overall dynamics like the crescendos and decrescendos were very good.
2. The second page was done very well and we seemed more confident
Constructive:
1. It seemed as if each section was going at different tempos starting at measure 13. I think that we need to count more often.
2. The measures for 2nd violin, with the rhythm one quarter note followed by a tie of a half note and a quarter note, like on measure 71, sounds out of tempo and we sound a little uneasy playing it.
Positive: measures 55-66 were together
82-88 were also together
Constructive: 5-13 we had no pulse
For the most part we could have been more in tune and together.
27-28 fell apart
The song sounded beautiful at some parts.
The basses had good dynamics
In measures 40-47 we were off tempo.
The last 3 measures the violins started screeching like hyaenas.
Positive!
1. Throughout the piece everyone seems to know the notes well
2. The ending measures (last 3) were together especially the last note
Constructive-
1. The first 5 measures did not seem together throughout the orchestra
2. We can work on being more in sync for measure 82 at the end when we come back after the stop as well as making sure the last note is played in tune for the first violins
We are not together through the beginning (specifically 1-13)
Lack of confidence in the beginning
The ending is way more confident than the beginning (basses played good fff)
Measure 34 cellos sounded good
Positive:
-we had a strong ending and sounded together
-Measures 55-56 were sounded rlly good and was in tune
Negative:
-We weren’t together and didn’t have any rhythm i’m the first 13 measures
– In measure 25 we began to fall apart completely and I couldn’t hear the song
Dynamics were relatively good throughout the piece
Ending was confident
Togetherness overall needed a lot of work.
Intonation was off, especially for violins.
Positives:
1. Good intonation
2. Good dynamics
Constructive:
1. Towards the beginning of this piece, we fumbled a little clumsily into it. We need to breathe together before we play so that we can enter as one unit and not 5.
2. We need to count more because at certain times we were together and in others we were not. We need to have one steady pulse for all of the sections and not concentrate on our specific piece but how all the other pieces fit in as well.
Positive: 1. The the intonation was good. 2. The piece was stronger than the other one. Constructive: 1. Some parts are not together. 2. Violins are to quiet
we sounded more confident and it seemed like we knew our dynamics. we need to work on the ending and the measures 65-75 we sound out of tune.

Pos.
1. overall, relatively together.
2. fingerings are in the correct position.
Neg.
1. We need to work on our pacing in measures #22-25 for cellos.
2. We need to work on staying together with pacing and intonations’ in measures #79-81
