The LHS Chamber Orchestra will be performing at the KSU Orchestra Invitational on Friday, October 18 at 5:20 PM in the Bailey Performance Center on the KSU Campus. The performance will be followed by a clinic by nationally-known educator Dr. Louis Bergonzi from the University of Illinois-Chicago. The performance is free and open to the public and it would be great if you were able to attend! Our performance experience will include: ● Rehearsal and warm-up time in Scott Rehearsal Hall (in the Bailey Center adjacent to the performance stage) ● Performance on stage in Morgan Concert Hall in the Bailey Performance Center. ● Clinic with Dr. Louis Bergonzi, Professor Emeritus, University of Illinois-Chicago. Dr. Bergonzi is a nationally-recognized guest clinician immediately following performance. ● Assessments of your ensemble by guest clinician and KSU faculty via audio caption and written feedback. ● “Conductor Cam” video recording. ● High-quality audio and video recordings of the performance. ● Dinner at the KSU Commons KSU has an incredible culinary program and wonderful dining experience. Many students agree that the dining experience was on the of the best parts of the KSU trip! Our performance repertoire will include: * Holst: Brook Green Suite (violins to learn opposite 1/2 part) * Dvorak/Hoffman: Themes from The American Quartet (to be played from memory) * Mendelssohn: String Sinfonia #7 in D minor, I. Allegro (new piece) TENTATIVE ITINERARY (SUBJECT TO CHANGE) Friday, October 18 4:00 PM – School bus leaves LHS (Parents in cars follow) 4:30 PM – Arrive at KSU 4:30 PM – Warm-up 5:20 PM – Performance 5:45 PM – Clinic with Dr. Louis Bergonzi 6:10 PM – Dinner at KSU Commons (see info below) 7:50 PM – Watch Roswell HS Chamber Orchestra 8:30 PM – Bus leaves for home 9:00 PM – Bus arrives back at LHS DINNER INFORMATION Dinner for the buffet style meal is $12.50 Per person. We will collect this prior to our trip via our website at https://www.lassiterorchestra.org/product/ksu-dinner For this trip, will be taking a school bus to KSU after school and eating dinner at KSU after to our warm-up and performance. Dinner is $12.50 and includes everything students might want! (See below!) Having previously worked at KSU, I ate lunch at the Commons many times, I can assure you they have very good food! Dinner will feature an all-you-can eat buffet at “The Commons,” KSU’s award-winning dining facility. The dining stations include:
CHAPERONES/VOLUNTEERS We are looking for 2 parent chaperones who will attend the trip and ride the bus to KSU. We are also looking for a driver or two (with an SUV/van) who can transport our 4 basses and some cellos. OTHER NOTES If you attend our performance and would like to transport your child home, please send me an email to charles.laux@cobbk12.org. I will need to see you with your child before you leave KSU that evening. ABOUT OUR CLINICIAN Louis Bergonzi is Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois-Chicago, where he was Head of Music and Director of the UIC Orchestra. Previous positions have included Professor and Daniel J. Perrino Chair in Music Education at the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, where he specialized in conducting and string education; and as a member of the Music Education Faculty at the Eastman School of Music. His career as began as grades 4-12 string specialist and orchestra conductor for the Lexington (Massachusetts) Public Schools. From 1998-2000, Dr. Bergonzi served as President of the American String Teachers Association, which awarded him the Paul Rolland Lifetime Achievement Award in 2024. Active as a clinician, adjudicator, and guest conductor of youth orchestras throughout Asia, Australia, and North America, his books and arrangements for younger orchestras are published by Kjos Publishers and Alfred Music Publishing. He was co-director of Establishing Identity: LGBT Studies & Music Education I -III (2010/2012/2016) symposia designed to provide energy to the discussion of how LGBTQ issues operate within music education in terms of research, curriculum, teacher preparation, and the musical lives and careers of LGBTQ music students and teachers. He is currently producing the work for string orchestra, piano, and two narrators that guides the audience through United States LGBTQ history from World War II through the US Supreme Court 2015 decision on Obergefell v. Hodges, establishing marriage equality.
