It’s been a busy first few weeks of school.  We have been getting everything organized, working on our string technique, and are preparing a few musical selections for our fall concert.  Here is the latest news from our orchestra!

Open House
I am looking forward to seeing you at open house tomorrow (8/22).  The PTSA meeting begins at 6PM and the class visits begin at 6:30 PM. We will be able to go through some of the curricular topics and I can answer any questions you may have about this school year.   Remember, the orchestra room can’t be easily accessed due to construction.  From the main building, you must exit the doors near the auxiliary gym, turn right, the reenter the orchestra/chorus hallway.
Fall Camp Recap

Our fall camp was spectacular! The students worked so hard and our guest clinicians did a great job helping breaking the summer rust off! I really enjoyed hearing the clinicians comments about how awesome our students were. :-)

From the orchestra room…
Technique work
Every orchestra has been focusing on technique that will improve our skills and allow us to play even better music. While the technical work may not be the most fun, it is imperative that students understand its importance in becoming better musicians.  We will spend some time each class working on technique and will follow with our repertoire.  Scales, arpeggios, exercises, and more!

Practice expectation
It is expected that students dedicate some time to practice at home. I know students are very busy!  They have a lot of academic homework work and many also participate in sports or other extracurricular activities. Even a short time practicing several times a week can make a huge difference in a students progress. Please encourage them to practice! Some students who do not have instruments at home may check instruments out for a weekend, or can come in before school, during their lunch, or after school to practice.

Assignments
There have been three assignments due so far.  These can still be turned in.  Directions for each assignment can be found in the Student View Gradebook.
  1. Camp Survey
  2. Baseline Scale and Arpeggio Video (submit to CTLS)
  3. Handbook Acceptance form

Students also earn weekly rehearsal skills grades.  If a student missed camp, the makeup assignment will be posted soon.
Orchestra Fees & Uniforms

Orchestra Fees
As stated in the orchestra handbook, the orchestra asks for your help with funding all of the great things we do.  Our LHS Orchestra Association (LHSOA) works tirelessly to support the orchestra program and a large part of the orchestra’s yearly budget is from student fees.

The student fees cover:
✔ Supplemental instruction through workshops, clinics, and fall/winter camps ✔ Equipment such as tuners, shoulder rests, batteries, rock stops, rosin, cloths, steel wool, etc. ✔ Yearly purchase of new music for orchestra and small ensembles, method books ✔ Guest instructors, performers, or clinicians ✔ Bus transportation on some orchestra field trips ✔ Entry fees and recording fees for performance evaluation or other performances ✔ Fees for performance sites and maintenance ✔ Student recognition awards – certificates, medals, and orchestra letters ✔ Food on competition days, after concerts, for workshops, and hospitality events ✔ Assist with purchases of new instruments and equipment ✔ Instrument and bow repairs and replacement ✔ The Lassiter Orchestra T-Shirt ✔ Student ticket to the annual awards banquet

Fees can be paid online at https://www.lassiterorchestra.org/shop. Fee payments are due Tuesday, September 3.  Please reach out to Dr. Laux if you have questions or concerns about this.
